Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Training
Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer TrainingCoast Guard Rescue Swimmer TrainingThe Coast Guards rescue swimmer training school has one of the highest student attrition rates of any special operations school in the military. Roughly 75 to 100 students go through 24 weeks of Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer school in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and just over half of them complete the course successfully. Some years, the dropout rate for this program has been as high as 80 percent. And this is from a pool of candidates of Coast Guard personnel who are conditioned to be able to swim well. Its definitely not a job for the faint of heart. Requirements for Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers Rescue swimmers must have flexibility, strength, endurance, and be able to function for 30 minutes in heavy seas. This is obviously far and above the normal lifeguard course youre not just treading water, youre expected to be able to hold your breath, and perform challenging tasks. Rescue swimmers need to be able to p rovide basic life support for whoever they may be rescuing, of course, and their training will include emergency medical training (EMT) course. But its not the standard EMT training its for rescues to be conducted in the open seas under extreme conditions. Standards for Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers The required monthly physical training fitness regimen includes a 12-minute crawl swim of 500 yards or longer, a 25-yard underwater swim and a 200-yard buddy tow. Those are in plus-rechnen to performingpush-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups, just like other military fitness tests. Here are the minimum fitness requirements for each category ExerciseMinimum StandardPushups50Sit-ups60Pull-ups5Chin-ups5500-yard swimCompleted within 12 minutes25-yard underwater swimRepeat 4 TimesBuddy Tow200 yards Lessons for Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers The 137-page operations manual includes lessons in eight different water deployment procedures, 11 ways to approach, carry and release a survivor, seven ways to release equipment for Navy and Air Force flyers and ways to detangle the services different parachutes and backpacks. Rescue swimmers also must have the skills to provide basic pre-hospital life support for rescued individuals. And as part of their training, candidates must complete a four-week emergency medical training course at the Coast Guard EMT school in Petaluma, California Training Regimen for Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers Adding even more pressure during training, instructors treat candidates with a drill sergeant style. But this is perhaps the most crucial part of the training if these candidates cant endure extreme conditions, its going to be hard to rescue someone in distress. Candidates selected for the school must first go through what is called the airmen training course. The four-month-long course, which, despite its name, has nothing to do with the Air Force, helps prepare candidates for the grueling rescue swimmer course. The first six weeks of the four-m onth course is loaded with rescue swimmer training. While they are going through the swimming and classroom phase of their training, candidates also must attend classes to learn about the aircraft they will serve on. Finally, before graduating, candidates are required to reisepass a test involving multiple rescue scenarios.

Refresh your resume in 5 steps (while employed)
Refresh your resume in 5 steps (while employed)Refresh your resume in 5 steps (while employed)It never hurts to freshen up your resume with new achievements and an eye toward the future of your career, especially while employed. Shifting technology makes what to include on your resume even more tricky. Do you include an objective? What about your LinkedIn profile? How do you make your resume less boring?Print out your resume and get your red pen ready. A hard copy lets you see details you might otherwise pass over. Heres what you need to do to liven your resume up1. Keep the format simpleOddly formatted resumes are the bane of hiring managers existences. The creative colors, spacing, and various fonts become an eyesore, making you stand out in a different way than what you intended. Saving the file as a PDF keeps the data from warping when opened in different software.Keep the format simple and intuitive for others to navigate. A sans serif font is easiest on the eyes, and dont go cr azy with bold, italicizing and underlining. Balance white space with content. Information on your resume should be quick and easy to locate, elend give you a headache.Save the creative design for the creatives. If youre a designer or creative, consider designing an infographic resumeto let your resume showcase your skills in a sensible and helpful way. Your resume should easy to peruse and relevant to the job role and industry.2. Make cutsYoud be surprised aboutwhat you dont need in a resume. You wont be surprised, though, to know that managers are skimming for required details that categorize you according to assumption rather than talent. Try these tipsIf youre not a new graduate, eliminate the year of graduation. Cutting the date lets them measure your merit while adding up years.Take out References available upon request. Thats obvious.Delete soft skills. Save job intricacies for the interview, and list the measurable achievements.Leave out high school and college accomplishments if it was years ago. Focus on now.Goodbye, Objective section That detail is for your cover letter.Consider deleting your address. Most of the time, thats added to a database as you apply, or is filled out during paperwork. Some managers may assume you cant handle the commute. A telephone and email address is enough.3. Add linksInclude relevant social media and professional links in your resume. Does your industry require you to network and recruit new geschftlicher umgang and professionals? Does your role deal with marketing or influencing, especially as an industry expert?Convenientlylink hiring managers right to the information they need in one resource. List your Twitter, LinkedIn, blog and new digital publications. Use hyperlinks with relevant text, instead of lengthy URLs, and only use when appropriate.4. Engage with active verbsResumes are polluted with passive word choices, especially when it comes to overused verbs. You dont want your resume to sound like a life coach givin g a TED talk while jumping out of a plane. However, your resume showcases your talents and how you performed within your job role. Your word choices can disempower you. Use active verbs.Be precise, accurate andengage with compelling verb choices. Ditch these terms led, helped, handled, worked and responsible for. Imagine your verbs as the pull back on an arrow before hitting the target - the force and energy required to snag the job. Avoid clichs, such as go-getter.Did you lead a project? Try chaired, headed, executed or coordinated. Had a vision come to life? Try devised, launched, pioneered or spearheaded. Save the company budget? Try diagnosed, deducted, consolidated or conserved. Active verbs dont have to be flashy to catch attention.5. Use keywords to your advantageTechnology has made the hiring process easier for management, by allowing software to scan resumes for details that match the job description. Usekeywords to your advantageby placing them, where relevant, in your re sume.Do you have a copy of your job description? Look up alternative names for your role (or desired role), and analyze what keywords are used. Dont lie and dont copy the job description word for word. Yet, realize that your resume isnt likely getting a first pass by a human being. Dont leave out specific software, years of experience and desired qualifications that are listed if you have those.Youll also find specific language with strong word choices unique to that industry and described in ways you may have not considered. Your cover letter and interview will also benefit from this knowledge. This strategy is particularly helpful when analyzing job descriptions for a role that you wish to grow into as your career develops. Start tailoring your resume nowTrends in what makes a proper resume shift on the whims of manager preferences, but a little common sense maintains certain rules. Simplicity is key, even in an age of developing technology. Focus on precision, hard numbers and ac tive voice when sharing your achievements on your resume. Just a few changes will refresh your resume and give it the pep needed to reach for your career goals. This article first appeared on YourCoffeeBreak.

The Best Morning Routine Hacks Proven to Boost Productivity
The Best Morning Routine Hacks Proven to Boost ProductivityThe Best Morning Routine Hacks Proven to Boost Productivity Developing the perfect morning praxis that maximizes your lifestyle and predilections - while squeezing the most productivity out of your days - is a trial-and-error process. You have to know yourself in order to customize the best morning routine, and one size doesnt fit all. For example Do you need coffee to even get into the shower? If the answer is a resounding yes, consider buildingit into your routine by preparing your coffee maker the night before. That way, you can wake up and immediatelyhit the on switch. The good news is that some morning best practices have been shown to help successful business moguls and entrepreneurs make the most of their time and energy. Take a look to see which morning routine hacks you can build into your ritual to help you ramp up productivity and reach your goals. Not all wildly successful people are early risers, but it seems amajority of them are. Richard Branson has said , No matter wherbeie I am in the world, I try to routinely wake up at around 5 a.m. By rising early, Im able to do some exercise and spend time with my family, which puts me in a great mind frame before getting down to business.Branson is joined by other celebrated early risers , such as Apple CEO Tim Cook (4 a.m.), Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey (5 a.m.) andStarbucks executive chairman Howard Schultz (430 a.m.).Research suggests many successful people wake up well before the work daybegins. By doing the same, you can make time to exercise, walk your dog, meditate, spend time with family and get a jump on the day before you get worn down by your duties.Start your morning the evening before. Its not until the end of one work day that you clearly understand what needs to get done the next work day. So before you log off, make a list of what youd like to accomplish the following day, like entrepreneur and Shark Tank investor Kevin O Leary does.He has said , Before I go to sleep, I write down three things that I have to get done the next morning before I take a call, write a text or an email or talk to anyone else except my family. And they can be random things, like Call your daughter at school and ask about whether shes done this or that or Close a deal. What I found welches once you get those three things done, the rest of your day becomes amazingly productive.Do the hardest thing on your to-do list first.Author Mark Twain is cited to have said, Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day. The adage suggestscompleting your most difficult task first, and these words were embraced and demonstrated by overachievers for generations after.Gina Trapani, founding editorof Lifehacker.com, gave her take on why First thing in the morning your mind is clear, the office is quiet, and you havent gotten pulled into six different directions - yet. Its your one opportu nity to prioritize the thing that matters to you most, before your phone starts ringing and email inbox starts dinging. By knocking out something important on your to-do list before anything else, you get both momentum and a sense of accomplishment before 10 a.m.Tackle the hardest thing while you still have a significantreserve of mental and physical energy. After you wake up, hydrate youve just gone for a long stretch of time without drinking any water. Water perks you up and gets your muscles and organs working, said Rania Batayneh , nutritionist and author of The One One One Diet . One of the biggest indicators of lethargy or low energy is that you are dehydrated.Thats why power players like Arianna Huffington , founder of both The Huffington Post and Thrive Global, and Kat Cole, president of FOCUS Brands (parent company of Auntie Annes, Carvel and Cinnabon), start their mornings with a tall glass of water.A 2016 study from CareerBuilder suggests cell phones and texting are the bi ggest productivity killers at work. Constantly checking your smartphone can seriously impede your ability to focus and finish tasks, so its a good idea to limit your access by banishing it to a drawer except for designated times. You can also consider turning your phone off completely and turning it back on during lunch hour.Having trouble getting out of bed? Turn on multiple lights.Whether its natural or artificial, light is significant because it tells the brain that the day has begun and sends signals to the body to stop producing melatonin, the hormone that helps regular sleep, saidDr. W. Christopher Winter , medical director for the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Charlottesville, Va.If its dark when you want to wake up - say, 5 a.m., for example - you can fool your brain into thinking the sun is up by using bright indoor lights, Winter said .Exercise first thing in the morning.Richard Branson, Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg all prioritize fitness upon waking. Exercise helps boost their energy, motivation, productivity and physical and mental stamina.Branson is a dedicated runner and cyclist, and he credits exercise for his ongoing productivity. I definitely can achieve twice as much by keeping fit, Branson said . It keeps the brain functioning well.Science suggests a correlation between mental sharpness, memory and exercise. According to Harvard Medical Schools journal , working out causes your brain to secrete a chemical called neurotrophic factor, which boosts brain function.Tony Robbins and Oprah Winfrey both opt for healthy, high-protein breakfasts to increase focus and productivity throughout the day. Lifestyle expert and registered dietician Lisa De Fazio explained that your first meal of the day should be a balance of high-fiber carbohydrates and lean protein. The former helps regulate blood sugar levels, while thelatter can help you feel full for longer. While Robbins opts for a high-protein breakfast and has been reporte d to favor unusual options like fish and salad or quinoa and hummus, Winfrey is a fruit enthusiast and typically enjoys berries and passion fruit alongside multigrain toast. Many mogulsmeditate first thing in the morning. Theyre not alone in this practice, and studies show that daily meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety.Meditation provides the mind with a daily single-task workout so you can remain focused on completing one thing at a time, instead of being mentally pulled in multiple directions. It can improve yourproductivity by supporting yourability to stay present. To get enough sleep, try to avoid drinking coffee five to seven hours before bedtime. Also, create a sleep-friendly environment in your bedroom that is free from screens (which couldhamper the production of melatonin). Its a good idea to engage in a sleep routine that cues your body that its time for bed, which could meananything from a warm bath to reading a book, and aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a ni ght.Arianna Huffington became a well-known sleep crusader after she collapsed from exhaustion in 2007 and wrote a book called The Sleep Revolution about the importance of quality rest. Her nightly routine was detailed in Fast Company First, she turns off all her devices 30 minutes prior to bedtime and escorts them outside of her bedroom. Next, she takes a hot bath, which washes away the day, slows down my brain, and winds down the body. She opts for dedicated pajamas instead of what she used to wear to bed - gym clothes - and only reads physical books that have nothing to do with work when shes under the covers. These tend to be poetry, philosophy and fictional books. Huffington tops off her ritual with writing down three things shes grateful for.To avoid decision fatigue, dont waste time or brainpower making low-level decisions. You can minimize these by creating a routine for choices like what youll wear and eat on a certain day.Mark Zuckerberg has built this strategy into his r outine by famously wearing a uniform of sorts every day - a gray T-shirt and hoodie - and hes not alone in this approach. Barack Obama took a similar approach to his clothes and breakfast.Jack Dorsey has regular morning rituals as well and has said I look to build a lot of consistent routine.Same thing every day. Dorsey said it helps enablehim to be effective during unpredictable moments that can come withrunning two companies.Life coach and author Tony Robbins has a daily morning ritual that includes acknowledging what hes grateful for in his life. I do three and a half minutes of pure gratitude about three things, Robbins said . I pick one of those three to be simple the wind on my face, my childrens faces, anything. This daily practice can not only push your mindset in a positive direction but also help overpower discouraging emotions like fear and anger. In one study , scientists instructeda group of a people with a neuromuscular condition tokeep a daily gratitude journal, wh ile another group kept a daily journal recording hassles of their days. The first group reported being 25 percent happiercompared to those participating in the hassle condition. According to the study, They exercised an average of 1.5 hours moreand reported less physical symptoms (like headaches, shortness of breathand chest pain).Reading is strongly correlated to success factors like income level and job position, according to Tom Corley, author of Rich Habits The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals .Driven individuals read not only to learn and achieve more in their industry but also to be aware of current events and how they affect their businesses. Many business moguls read in the morning, including Warren Buffett and Richard Branson.Exercise and family time put me in a great mind frame before getting down to business, wrote Richard Branson on his blog . Jeff Bezos also reportedly eats a leisurely breakfast with his family. It makes sense Many people feel they have the mo st energy and heightened ability to focus in the morning, and breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. You just need to match your design with the business and job position you desire. In the majority of situations, tailoring your abilities and experience to the job which you want can help you stick out from the crowd more than any gimmick. Theres no doubt that the more artistic the more you are able to demonstrate that youre indeed someone creative for the position that theyre seeking to fill. At the close of the day, your resume is a means to advertise yourself.

Exploring Employee Referral Programs Big Talent Pool, Short Timeframe
Exploring Employee Referral Programs Big Talent Pool, Short Timeframe When it comes to sourcing candidates, a solid employee referral program (ERP) is one of the most effective places to start. Jobvite discovered that implementing a strong employee referral program in itsrecruiting process increased employee satisfaction it also found that 46 percent of employees hiredvia referral stay for more than a year, 45 percent stay beyond two years, and 47 percent stay for more thanthree years. With numbers like these, it makes sense for all employers to explore ERPsmore thoroughly. Shorter Recruitment ProcessRecruiting processes conducted viacareer sites cantake up to 45 days job boards recruit within approximately 39 days. An effective ERP, on the other hand, can fill a position in roughly 29 days. Sixty-nine percent of recruiters using employee referrals to hire candidatessay recruiting through this pro cess takes less time, and an additional 51 percent say its more cost-effective. Referrals simply move through the system more quickly, often becausehiring manager can pre-approve candidatesand recruiters can beipass agency fees and/or expensive postings.Larger Talent PoolsBy asking a kollektiv of 75 employees for contacts of potential candidatesassuming each employee has a handful of friends, family members, and acquaintances to refer recruiters can quickly find11,250 new candidates. This isspecific math from specific companies, butstudies showthat referrals expose companies to more qualified talent and talent thats more likely to stick around than other, costlier methods.Likely Positions to RecruitSome positionshave a higher likelihood of hiring via employee referral than others. Highly skilled positions may be harderto fill using ERPs, simply because candidates for these positions are already scarce. On the other hand, positions in marketing, sales, HR, and design can be quite easy to recruit for via ERPs. Furthermore, applicants referred for sales positions are twice as likely to be hired than those who have been referred for engineering positions.Proper PraiseCash reward is the top incentivefor motivating employees to participatein ERPs, but its also important to praise employees for taking part in the recruitment process, regardless of the outcome. Whether the candidate(s) referred by an employee successfully make it onto the team or not, employers should reward participating employees with company lunches, monetary rewards, or social praise. Employees are more likely to engagein the referral process when offeredcash rewards between $2,500 and $5,000 far less than the cost of using an agency recruiter.Employee Engagement Giving employees something to be proud of will increase theirengagement in the process. Here are a few tips on creating an engaging work environmentCreate a compelling site.Make participation simple forhigher sign-up rates.Develop interest ing job descriptions to grab the attention of those candidates who are being referred.Recognize employees who engage in the process. Doing so will ensure future engagement.Use gamification to boost participation.Give participating employeesfeedbackto help improve future referral results.Additional Benefits One in fivecandidates referred byemployeesare hired. Referrals also offer the most productive diversity hires. Employe-referred candidatestend to be better fits for acompany because these candidates have been vetted by current employees and are more likely to understand the waythe company works. Many employees tend to stay awayfrom ERPsfor fear thattheir candidates wont respond to hiring managers, but implementing the above tactics can help ensure higher participation rates and high-quality referrals.Get started withemployee referrals today and watch your recruiting and retention rates skyrocket

Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jitters
Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersHeres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersWhen you truly want a job, the excitement over an upcoming interview can turn into a debilitating knot of anxiety in your stomach. This anxiety can have disastrous consequences on your interview performance. When you are too worried about how to act, you are not thinking clearly on how to best present yourself in front of others. In a new survey of 2,000 Americans, almost half said that getting too nervous was their biggest job interview mistake. You do not have to be one of them. It is possible to channel your anxiety into a more positive pre-interview ritual. Heres howReframe the story you are telling yourselfFor anxious people, one moment you can be fine, the next few minutes you can be feeling the symptoms of a panic attack - dizzy, nauseous, short of breath. To break out of a crippling pattern of anxiety, it helps to take control of the story you are telling yourself. You cannot contr ol the first anxious thought that pop into your head, but you can control how you react to it. Learning to observe your body without judgment is how you can use mindfulness to your advantage. Labeling your feelings positively can be part of this. One recent study found that a positive attitude can help us weather emotional distress. To harness the power of your anxiety, psychologist Alicia Clark says that you can tell yourself that the feeling of your heart racing, which you thought was the discomfort of anxiety, is actually a crackle of excitement. When you are waiting to meet the hiring manager, tell yourself that your sweaty palms and nervous jitters are a positive sign of your excitement. These signals are telling you that you are passionate about this job. If you are passionate about a role, it means that the job could be a great fit for you.Write it downYou can also empty out your anxious thoughts about the interview in writing before it happens. This is a method for you to notic e the fictions you are telling yourself, and to reframe them. Before the day of the interview, schedule a time to write down your worst-case scenario. You forget your interviewers name You mangle your answers Spend time outlining what you fear could happen. This does two important things when you schedule a time to worry, you can focus on the present moment. In one study, anxious participants who got a scheduled time to worry showed significant decreases in their overall anxiety and insomnia. When you know you have time to worry, you do not have to stay up the night before an interview in a panic. And second, the act of writing offloads our worries onto the page. One study found that participants who journaled their worries got better grades on a test than those who did not.Labeling your anxieties helps you take control of your circumstances. When you give your fears names, it helps you put them in perspective and it reduces the power these thoughts hold over you.

Pursue Life-Long Self-Development and Become a Sage
Pursue Life-Long Self-Development and Become a SagePursue Life-Long Self-Development and Become a SagePeople define success differently. For some, success means having achieved financial security or career pinnacles. Some people judge their success by the positive impact they have made on others whether these are clients, students, associates, or family. Other successful people have acquired a level of expertise that is recognized and respected by peers. But despite these differing definitions of what constitutes success, successful people themselves have similar characteristics. First, they are self-confident without being arrogant. This comes from being self-aware knowing ones strengths and weaknesses, knowing ones goals and remaining true to ones values and capabilities.Second, they are willing to grow by challenging their limits of knowledge and experience. And third, they are willing to reflect on and learn from experience. Websters Dictionary defines a sage as one who is wise th rough reflection and experience. In ancient cultures, a groups sages were those who had experienced rich lives and were thoughtful about what they had learned through these experiences. In contemporary times, groundbreaking research by the Center for Creative Leadership in the late 1980s found that successful executives were those who had benefited from the lessons of experience. So from these common traits of successful people, those striving for success can seek to practice three fundamental steps to self-development. Self-Development Step Know Thyself This is the most basic tenet of psychology, self-improvement, and emotional intelligence. If you think you need to get to know yourself better, try these basics. Solicit Feedback Regularly Perception is reality. Seek to understand how people perceive you. You may not be achieving the impact you expected in leading or working with others. You can not adjust your approach without the benefit of feedback that can inform you in term s of how your intentions were received by others. Be proactive in finding out what people think about you and your style of interacting and your approach. Be open to and appreciative of the feedback you receive, not defensive. Seek to understand rather than to be understood. Reflect on wertzuwachs Some successful people are gregarious and extroverted while others are reserved and introverted. But all successful people know how to spend time alone being reflective and thoughtful about recent performance and behavior. Take time every day to reflect on the days work and interactions.Always take ample time at the conclusion of major elements of work to reflect on the quality of what you produced and the effectiveness of your work with others. The key to reflecting on performance is remaining balanced in your self-assessment. Be self-critical understand what you could have done better and learned from these mistakes. But also acknowledge success whenever warranted celebrate and take prid e in what you have done well. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses As you collect feedback and reflections, come to understand your partieal strengths and weaknesses. Know that everyone has both. Successful people build success from their strengths while they limit the negative impact of their weaknesses. The reason to identify your key strengths and weaknesses is not so that you can improve your weaknesses. It is much mora important to identify your key strengths and leverage these. The management guru, Peter Drucker, in his classic article, Managing Oneself, states, One should waste as little effort as possible on improving areas of low competence. It takes far more energy and works to improve from incompetence to mediocrity than it takes to improve from first-rate performance to excellence. And yet most people, concentrate on making incompetent performers into mediocre ones. Energy, resources, and time should go instead to making a competent person into a star performer. Know Your J oys and Passions Be in tune with your emotions as you engage in your work. We all need to do elements of work that are tedious or displeasing, but the bulk of how you spend your day should satisfy you and make you feel good about your contributions and the impact of your efforts. Success is difficult to achieve without that level of satisfaction. Know that people who excel enjoy what they do and do what they enjoy. As stated earlier, contemporary research affirms what ancient societies have known all along those who are the wisest amongst a group are those who have had rich experiences and have learned from them. Consider these aspects of learning from experience. Development Occurs Within the Context of Work During most of the 20th century, companies and their employees tended to think about professional development as something that happened away from the job, in classrooms and workshops and seminars. These development options are used to build basic skills and provide the opportu nity for workers to interact within a cohort, but they do not compare with the capacity for development of real skills learned on the job and through the experiences of meaningful work with real implications and result. Growth Occurs Through Challenge and Stretch Once one achieves a level of comfort and ease in their job responsibilities then high performance may continue but growth and development will not. Individuals with the highest potential and talent need to continue to grow until their potential is reached. This means applying a consistent level of tension with respect to challenging the individuals skills, perceptions, and experiences. The appropriate stretch for development is consistently requiring job expectations that are just beyond those skills already mastered. Diversity of Experience and Depth Versus Breadth Know that ones career goals need to shape career experiences or else career experiences will shape career potential. Understanding how to apply this goes back t o the tenet of Know Thyself. Know how you will define your career success so you can build the appropriate career path to get there. Are your passions energized through expertise would you like to know all there is to know about a particular area? If so, you need to build an experts career that is deeply steeped within that area of expertise.Or perhaps your passions are energized by leading broad sets of people and your vision stretches across an organization or industry. In this case, you need to build a leaders career that is broad and encompasses a variety of knowledge and perspective. However, whether you are building depth or breadth, diversity of experience is critical to ongoing development. Always be looking for the next challenge, the newest goal that will mix things up and add another layer to the fabric of your career. Apply Your Lessons of Experience So, an important distinction in understanding how to develop through experiences is that the experience itself is only hal f the task. What is critical is that you learn from the experience and thus apply these lessons to future experiences. Again, this requires reflection and self-awareness and purposeful cognizance relative to learning. What did I learn from that? is a common question you should ask yourself following successes and failures. And when you have your answer to that question, be sure it is applied to your next experience. Learning from the experience- the task, the challenge, the work, the goals- is only half of the lessons potential. Each experience puts you in touch with people- clients, peers, reports, bosses, teachers, and mentors- all of whom have their own sets of lessons for you. Seek Diversity of Perspective Just as you should seek diverse experiences to expand your skill set, you should also seek diverse perspectives to expand your own thinking. We all enjoy and have a comfort level with people who are like me. But these people will only reinforce your current thinking without n ecessarily expanding or challenging you to think differently and just as in experiences, collecting diverse perspectives results in growth and development.Observe Others Be a people watcher. Be aware of how your colleagues interact with others and assess what works and what doesnt. Learn from those colleagues who are effective borrow their strategies and approaches. Learn from those colleagues who are ineffective guard against making the same mistakes you see them make as they interact. Exposure, Exposure, Exposure Anytime you can work on a project that exposes you to new contacts, new audiences, new networks do it Remember this it isnt really about who you know but it is all about who knows you.Solicit Feedback Regularly and Ask for Support Okay, so you heard this one already in Step One. Its that important to hear it again. One way you learn from people is to learn what they think about you and can provide feedback about how effective you are in interacting with them. When yo u receive feedback that requires you to adjust your behavior or experiment with new ways of interacting, ask your feedback providers to support you and help you to improve by reminding you when you slip back to old patterns or acknowledging you when you successfully implement new ones. Networks Successful people are well networked, period. It may seem as though their broad and loyal networks of friends and associates are effortless and naturally attracted to the successful persons charismatic style. But the truth is probably more likely that the successful person works hard to keep connected to these networks by remaining cognizant of comings and goings and by keeping proactive and systematic goals to stay connected.Manage Your Own Performance Management Development on the job almost always means needing to learn from your boss. But some of us are more blessed than others when it comes to bosses who are natural coaches and mentors. Dont let a boss who is poor in performance manageme nt deprive you of the lessons you need to learn from him or her. Be proactive and persistent. Manage upwards schedule time with him or her, come prepared to the meeting with a structured agenda, a self-assessment of recent performance, and be prepared to solicit feedback directly. In closing, wisdom and success are within everyones reach through three steps you should practice daily. Know thyselfsolicit feedback, reflect, do what you loveLearn from experienceuse work to learn, challenge yourself, expose yourself to diverse experiences, and apply your lessons of experience.Learn from peopleseek diversity of perspective, be a people watcher, seek exposure, ask for support, maintain your networks, and take responsibility for your own performance management. - Susan McKeone is a key executive strategist and a preferred HR partner. She is committed to helping clients develop, motivate, and leverage talent.

According to a study, Millennial dads are terrible at this
According to a study, Millennial dads are terrible at this According to a study, Millennial dads are terrible at this Millennial dads are unlike any other dads when it comes to everyday fixes, according to a new survey.A new poll conducted by OnePoll found that Millennial dads are less capable compared to their own dads - Baby Boomers - when it comes to do-it-yourself fixes, finding that more than half of Millennials prefer to call a professional than fixing the problem themselves.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The poll, which interviewed 1,000 Millennial and 1,000 baby boomer dads, wanted to explore the habits of the different dads when it comes to around the housework. Surprisingly, over a third of Millennial dads donât even have the proper tools in their homes to carry out DIY jobs. Thirty-two percent claimed to not own a hammer while 38% wouldnât be able to fix loose screws because they donât own a screwdriver. In comparison, 93% of boomer dads said they owned a hammer.âThe technology in the average home has evolved,â said Anne Ferguson, VP of marketing at Alarm. âHi-tech upgrades like smart home technology require professional support, especially safety and security upgrades. Even the handiest dads see the value of partnering with a professional service provider on an important project like a smart home security system.âMillennial dads said they rather spend time with their children than partake in DIY activities. Sixty-one percent said they would rather hang out with their kids with nearly half saying they do a better job at spending quality time with their kids compared to their own dad.If thereâs one thing Millennial dads have the upper hand on their own dads, itâs being technologically savvy. Sixty-two percent of boomer dads said Millennial dads are better at tech-related jobs compared to themselves. Both grounds agreed that the expectations of being âhandyâ has changed with over three-quarters of both agreeing.âJust as dadsâ rol es have evolved, so has the definition of handiness,â says Ferguson. âTodayâs time-pressed dads are quick to master new tools like apps and mobile technology for their familiesâ benefit. Theyâre also more likely to outsource time-consuming home maintenance to professionals who have the tools and training to get the job done right - a handy trade-off that enables todayâs dads to spend more time with the people they love.âYou might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The science behind how rewards are actually de-motivating
The science behind how rewards are actually de-motivating The science behind how rewards are actually de-motivating Motivation is all over the media these days. It seems as though everyone has tips and tricks about how to get and stay motivated. But a lot of the information out there is misleading and sometimes might even result in you being less motivated. My day job involves changing individual and organizational behavior to align with best practices (mostly in health and public health) and my passion project is about motivating and supporting working moms to create a work-life balance that aligns with their values â" so I think about behavior change and motivation every single day.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!It can be so discouraging and frustrating to leave an amazing day where I trained nurses and doctors about how to motivate others to better implement evidence, only get on the subway, open my phone, and see all of this misinformation about motivation flying around. For example, one of the most common pieces of advice is to reward yourself when you finish a task. The idea is you will be motivated to get the reward, which will motivate you to complete the task. Unfortunately, science says almost the exact opposite will happen. If you are motivated to complete a task because of the reward, it might change your behavior for a while, but in the long term, you are actually less likely to do that task. Giving yourself rewards for completing a task might help motivate you that one time, but if the goal is to be motivated to do this tasks over and over, rewards make you want to do it less. You are probably wondering, âhow can rewards be de-motivating?âThe spectrum of motivation: Are you focusing on extrinsic instead of intrinsic motivation?Motivation experts, Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, developed a self-determination theory, which describes how and why people are motivated. Motivation exists on a spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, people are extrinsically m otivated (their motivation comes from a reward or punishment). Next, people are motivated by a sense of guilt or feeling they âshouldâ do something; this is called external motivation.Further along the spectrum, people are motivated because they believe an activity aligns with their values, this is known as internal motivation. At the other end of the spectrum, people are intrinsically motivated, in other words, they are motivated because they love doing the activity.Essentially there are 4 points along this motivation spectrum: Extrinsic (rewards or punishment); External (guilt); Internal (aligned with values); Intrinsic (you love doing it). How extrinsic motivation can work for you in the short-term and against you over timeIf you are not feeling motivated, you might have been doing a task for a reward or fear of punishment, which may have worked for a while, but doesnât seem as motivating anymore. This kind of extrinsic motivation can change behavior pretty dramatically in the short-term, but itâs unsustainable over time.A great example of this is kids learning to read (can you tell I have a 5-year-old?). Imagine you tell one kid (letâs call him Jack) that you will give him a sticker for every book he reads â" extrinsic motivation. With another kid (Liam), you tell him to read the books that he loves whenever he wants â" since most kids get pleasure from reading, this is intrinsically motivating. Research shows that Jack (extrinsically motivated) is going to read way more books than Liam (intrinsically motivated) early on. This is the reason that so many schools have these sticker reading programs â" it gets k ids to read more.Whatâs way more interesting and important is what happens over time. Jack will probably read more books than Liam. But during this time, Jackâs mind is equating reading with the reward. Even though he once loved to read for the sake of reading, eventually his brain rewires so that he likes reading because of the reward he gets. Once that happens, he wonât want to read unless he gets a reward, and the rewards will need to get bigger and bigger over time to keep him motivated. Meanwhile, Liam continues to enjoy reading, because he likes the act of reading, not because he gets a reward.By trying to motivate yourself with a reward, you are shifting your motivation towards the extrinsic end of the spectrum. If itâs a one-time unpleasant task, go for it. But if you want to sustain your motivation, you might want to think again. How can you shift to being more internally or intrinsically motivated? If you are feeling stuck in your motivation, think about how this tas k aligns with your values (i.e., internal motivation) or is related to activities that you love doing for the sake of the activity (i.e., intrinsic motivation), not for the end product (i.e., external motivation)?Exercise is such a great example for this spectrum. If you give yourself a reward for exercising, your brain thinks the benefit of exercising is to get the reward. Instead, can you focus on how much you enjoy exercising, like the act of running and feeling your feet hit the sidewalk? If you donât really enjoy the activity, could you think about the ways that exercise aligns with your values and priorities â" you want to be and feel fit. If thatâs still a stretch, start small and shift to doing it because you âshouldâ â" you know that your current lifestyle is making you at risk for a host of health problems. How can you get and stay motivated? Pick a task you have been struggling with and are not very motivated to do. Where does it fit on the spectrum? Create a plan to move down the spectrum of motivation. Talk to people about motivation â" you would be surprised by how many people struggle with motivation and the more people on board, the better you can be about holding each other accountable. Think about when are you using rewards or punishments to drive behavior (for yourself, your employees)? Is there another approach you could be using? Good luck getting (and staying) motivated!Julia Egan has a Ph.D. from Penn State in human development and is the cofounder of Balancing Bravely, a resource for working moms striving to create a work-life balance that allows them to thrive. How to talk about professional mistakes in an interview
How to talk about professional mistakes in an interview How to talk about professional mistakes in an interview When a recruiter asks you to divulge the details of a professional mistake youâve made on the job during an interview for a position, your phrasing is crucial. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.Make sure you pick the right mistakePicking the wrong error you made definitely wonât work in your favor.Suzy Welch, a management author, journalist, founder of the Jack Welch Management Institute and CNBC contributor, told CNBC Make It that you shouldnât âhumble bragâ when talking about a professional mistake. She says to talk about one that is âbig enough to show youâve got the bumps and bruises of real experience, but small enough to convey you are generally highly competent.âSteer clear of these answersAlison Doyle, a job search and career expert, author and founder and CEO of CareerToolBelt.com, writes in The Balance about what you shouldnât say, in response to the interview question âWhat have you learned from your mistakes?âDoyle writes, âYou want your exampl e of a mistake to be honest. However, itâs a good idea not to mention a mistake that would be critical for success in the new position. For instance, give an example from your last position that isnât specifically related to the job requirements for the new position.ââItâs also a good idea to mention something that is relatively minor,â Doyle adds. âAlso avoid mentioning any mistakes that demonstrate a flaw in your character (for example, a time you got in trouble for fighting at work),âDonât blame someone elseRichard Moy, a Content Marketing Writer for Stack Overflow, writes in The Muse that you should not âpass the buckâ when responding to the interview question âTell me about a time you made a mistake.ââHey, we all make mistakes. And anyone youâll interview with for any job knows this. But, when you know something was your fault, do yourself a favor and own up to it. Nobody wants to work with someone whoâs always pointing fingers, and yet, too many applicants I met with went out of their way to convince me there was nothing they couldâve done differently. This was a huge bummer, especially when I had grown to like the candidate a lot,â Moy writes. âWhen in doubt, choose a blunder you can articulate the details of, and open up as much as possible.âAnswering this question is a balancing act - itâs all about choosing your mistake wisely and not misplacing the blame while showing that youâre still the one for the job.

4 Times You Dont Want to Get Ahead at Work - The Muse
4 Times You Dont Want to Get Ahead at Work - The Muse 4 Times You Dont Want to Get Ahead at Work Itâs easy to think that thereâs one direction you should be moving in your career: forward. Youâre supposed to keep putting one foot in front of the other until you finally reach the top of that proverbial ladder. But, hereâs the thing: Career paths arenât always so simple. And, just because something seems like it will get you one rung higher doesnât necessarily mean itâs the best decision for you long-term. Not convinced? Here are four times that a step forward at work is actually taking you one step back in your career. 1. When a Promotion Takes You Away From What You Love Of course, a promotion is a great thing. Youâre being formally recognized (and compensated!) for all of your valuable contributions with a new title and a pay bump. But, that step up also likely involves some changes to your daily responsibilities- which may or may not be what you want. Perhaps this new position means youâll no longer need to attend those weekly marketing meetings, which are actually one of your favorite parts of each work week. Or, maybe instead of communicating directly with customers (which you love!), youâll now be charged with overseeing the team that does that. Thatâs not to say that you should turn down that offer for a promotion without batting an eye (that decision deserves some serious consideration!). But, itâs worth thinking through whether or not you could take that superior role without losing all of the job duties youâve grown to love. 2. When a New Responsibility Eats Up Time for Your Side Project Your boss gives you a new responsibility to take on at work. Youâre honored that she would trust you to grab the reins on something new. But, youâre also aware that this is going to involve much longer hours- hours that you were previously dedicating to the side hustle that youâd eventually like to take full-time. In a situation like this, itâs important to take a step back and consider your long-term career goals. If you do intend to make your side project your full-time career in the near future, thatâs going to involve some time and dedication- which youâll be short on if you continue to fill up your plate at your day job. 3. When a Speaking Opportunity Is About a Topic You Have No Interest In Giving a presentation or agreeing to a public speaking opportunity is a great way to make some new connections and build your personal brand. But, thereâs a caveat here: You want whatever youâre asked to speak about to be somewhat relevant to your career and expertise. You donât want to establish yourself as a thought leader in a subject that totally deviates from your area of interest. No, thereâs nothing wrong with pushing yourself out of your comfort zone a little bit. But, you want to be careful not to foster a reputation thatâs totally irrelevant to your actual skills and your goals. Sure, being asked to speak about social media marketing at that association event might be an honor. However, it wonât do you too many favors if youâre growing your career as an engineer. In fact, agreeing to that opportunity will likely only serve to confuse people about who you are and what you bring to the table. 4. When a New Job Doesnât Fit Your Goals You werenât actively job hunting. But, you were approached by another company that ended up offering you a position. By all intents and purposes, this new role is a big step up. It comes with a higher salary, a fancier title, a corner office, and an employer thatâs a household name in your field. Whatâs the catch? Well, youâve been thinking about switching industries or making a major career change altogether- meaning that this new role doesnât fit with your plans for the future. Yes, accepting that position might mean a step forward- but, thatâs irrelevant if thatâs not actually the direction you want to be heading in. More often than not, a step up in your career is a great thing that deserves to be celebrated. However, there are some circumstances when that one step forward would ultimately take you two steps back. Regardless of your individual situation or preferences, itâs important to remember to give major career decisions- whether good or bad- the time for consideration that they deserve. Do that, and youâre much more likely to take things in the direction that works best for you.

Your Guide to Who Its OK to Hug at Work - The Muse
Your Guide to Who Its OK to Hug at Work - The Muse Your Guide to Who Its OK to Hug at Work A female friend- weâll call her Fran- recently called Mollie in a panic. âIâm worried I crossed a boundary at work,â she said. âSeveral times a year, I meet with a group at a hotel or conference venue for a few days to plan a big conference. The group members arenât my direct colleagues since they work at different organizations. I give everyone a hug goodbye when we leave, since weâre friendly and I know it will be a few months before I see them again. At our most recent meeting, there were several new people. As we said goodbye at the end of the week, I hugged the people I already knew. But then I felt awkward not giving a hug to the new people, so I went in to hug them as well. Now Iâm worried that I was too forward.â Sound familiar? This is a common experience in the digital age when work communication has been brought to a whole new level of intimacy. Messages from your manager might include emojis or arrive via text or Facebook Messenger. People you havenât actually met in person feel like they could be actual friends. So how do you know where to draw the line? We spent three years studying these kinds of challenges for our book, No Hard Feelings: Emotions at Work (And How They Help You Succeed). Graphic courtesy of Liz Fosslien and Mollie West-Duffy. First off, there are three levels of work relationships to consider, and each has a different hugging norm. There are the people you work with every day, like your teammates. Weâll call them your âday-to-days.â It would be a lot to hug these people hello or goodbye because you see them so frequently. Even if youâre leaving or coming back from vacation, itâs fine to just say or Slack them your greeting. And when it comes to your direct report (or someone else junior to you) or boss, unless youâre very close, a good general rule is to forget about hugs all together. Then there are people who you see less often, like colleagues who work in other offices, clients, or partners at other organizations. Weâll call these people your âoccasionals.â Itâs more normal to hug these people simply because you donât see them that often (as was the case in Franâs situation). However, there is a huge variance in peopleâs comfort level with hugging. Mollie has noticed that some of her clients, for example, are huggers, and some are definitely not. The clients who are huggers tend to view Mollie as a friend and partner, in addition to a consultant. The clients who are not huggers tend to view her as an advisor and prefer to keep a professional boundary by not hugging. Lastly, there are people who youâve just met or will only be seeing once. Weâll call these people your ânewlymets.â For example, Mollie often facilitates workshops for extended client teams. She knows she will only meet these workshop participants once, and so it would be weird to hug them hello or goodbye. Graphic courtesy of Liz Fosslien and Mollie West-Duffy. The problem in Franâs case was that she was interacting with people from two different levels at once: the âoccasionalsâ and the ânewlymets.â The norms for both of these groups are different. So, what to do? There are three good options: You can hug the âoccasionalsâ and offer a handshake to the ânewlymets.â Itâs unlikely that someone you just met will be offended that youâre not hugging them. You can wait to take your cue from the other person. As youâre going down the meeting-each-other line, donât launch in for either a hug or handshake, but watch the other personâs body language to see what theyâre going for. If you donât watch carefully, this can result in the awkward âhugshake,â which is what we call the jumbled mismatch of limbs when one person goes in for a hug and one goes in for a handshake. (If this happens, donât stress- itâs not the end of the world and will most likely be forgotten in an hour.) If you really want to hug the ânewlymetsâ for consistencyâs sake, you should acknowledge it. You can say something like, âI know we just met, but Iâm a hugger. Is it OK if I hug you as well?â This gives the other person a bit of a heads up and the opportunity to grant their permission (or not) before you go in for a hug. Graphic courtesy of Liz Fosslien and Mollie West-Duffy. One more note weâll make is that some people donât want to hug for reasons beyond not knowing you- because of personal space or sensory issues, or because of certain traumas, for example. So even if you love hugging, make sure youâre aware of the other personâs body language and are giving them the option to say no. Remember that itâs always better to err on the side of more formal. When in doubt, offer a handshake.
